Twitter — The First Social Network Allows NFT to be Avatars
Allowing NFT to be used as a profile image is seen as a “push” to assist Twitter grab a larger share of the rapidly increasing NFT space.
Twitter was the first major social media platform to enable users to select NFT assets as their profile image; however, only a few accounts were allowed to do so. An NFT avatar will appear in a hexagonal shape instead of a circle, and viewers may click on it to see details about that NFT project.
In the past year 2021, NFT has become a craze in the world when many digital art works have been successfully sold for several $million. NFT (Non-Fungible Token) is a blockchain data unit in which each NFT may represent a single file and hence can not be interchangeable. NFTs may be a variety of digital assets, including artwork, audio, video, books, and other works of art. NFT is considered a certificate of ownership for a certain item.
The ability to utilize NFT as a profile image is now only available to a select group of Twitter Blue users in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. The NFT avatar feature will link a user’s wallet account to OpenSea, the largest NFT marketplace platform on Ethereum, implying that Twitter will only support Ethereum’s NFT for the time being. MetaMask, Coinbase Wallet, Rainbow, Argent, Trust, and Ledger Live are among the wallets that are supported.
Twitter’s latest step demonstrates its ambitions for decentralized technology. Previously, Jack Dorsey, Co-Founder of Twitter, stated in July 2021 that Bitcoin will become “an essential element” in the future. By September 2021, this social network had also added a function that allowed users to donate Bitcoin to individuals they care about.
Twitter’s announcement comes as social networks are vying for a place in today’s ever-evolving NFT space. According to reports from Information and Financial Times, Meta is also looking into using NFT on Facebook and Instagram.
